Today we started our day by visiting a local elementary school and watched the children perform traditional songs and dances of Guanacaste. The children and faculty welcomed our group, gave us traditional food, and taught us about the history of Guanacaste. When thinking about the way our group was welcomed by the community, I think about one of the characteristics of ethical leadership: inclusivity. We were included in celebrations and meals even though we were strangers. It’s important to think about the fact that we aren’t just here to help turtles, but also to learn about and help the community around us. Inclusivity also is seen in the way Turtle Trax includes us in all of their plans and their space. I was very moved by today’s activities and can’t wait to learn more about Costa Rican culture.
I feel so grateful to be included in this group and the larger community around us.
