Alongside our partner, MarineLab, you will learn about marine ecology, coral reef restoration, and ocean conservation while gaining hands-on research experience in the Florida Keys.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This program will take you to Key Largo, Florida, the northernmost island in the Florida Keys, which sits among the protected marine habitats of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Everglades National Park, and John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, offering you a diverse range of marine ecosystems to explore and study.

While in Key Largo, you will learn about marine ecology, coral reef restoration, and ocean conservation through hands-on research, snorkeling expeditions, daily boat trips, and discovery labs. You will have the chance to engage all your senses in the ocean ecosystem while exploring local ​​mangroves and coral reefs. During your time, you will support the work of the MarineLab while engaged in hands-on research and coral reef restoration projects. You will also have the chance to learn about local wildlife and their nocturnal adaptations on a night lagoon snorkel.

When not engaged in project work, you will have the unique opportunity to learn from experts during nightly discussions about climate change, marine pollution, and the importance of coral reefs to the ocean ecosystem. Through this combination of activities, you will understand your role in our ecosystem and how your actions impact the global ecosystem.

LEARNING SERVICE
You will learn about marine ecology, coral reef restoration, and ocean conservation while participating in scientific research initiatives.

CURRICULUM
Prior to your travels, you will complete an online curriculum to gain background knowledge for your experience. While traveling, you will learn through engaging articles, cultural experiences, and group reflections.

TREKKING
Throughout the program, you will be walking as part of your daily activities, with short hikes as part of your research work.

LIVING CONDITIONS
You will be staying in dorm-style accommodation at the Marine Lab field site.

ON THE MOVE
You will take daily boat trips to snorkel, support coral restoration, and learn about seagrass/mangrove ecology.

REMOTENESS
You will be based at the Marine Lab Education Center in Key Largo, Florida.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive to Miami by 1 PM. Orientation. Lagoon Snorkel. Presentation on Coral Reef Ecology.

Day 2

Boat trip to study Seagrass/Mangrove Ecology and Coral Reef Ecology. Invertebrate Diversity lab.

Day 3

Coral reef restoration project. Nocturnal adaptations laboratory and night lagoon snorkel.

Day 4

Coral reef restoration project. Coral reef ecology laboratory.

Day 5

Coral reef ecology field trip. Marine debris laboratory.

Day 6

Seagrass ecology field trip. Climate change discussion.

Day 7

Depart for home.

Key Largo : In Three Phases

PRE-COURSE CURRICULUM

Prior to your departure, you will be guided by your course instructors through a series of interactive, online lessons designed to help you engage with other members of your group while gaining important context for your experience.

FIELD STUDY

The majority of the days at each site are spent learning from our local partners and serving alongside them shoulder-to-shoulder. You will learn through service and experiences designed to help you understand the local context, culture, and history.

LIFELONG NETWORK

Ethical leadership is a lifelong journey. After your experience, you will become a part of the Shoulder-to-Shoulder network. This network of past alumni and partners is designed to inspire and support your journey in ethical leadership.

Travel Journal

During the travel phase of each SStS course, you will spend time reflecting and processing your experience. This is a new program, so there are currently no posts.

Students are responsible for booking their own flights to meet the group in Miami. Once enrolled our admissions team will assist you in choosing the correct arrival and departure times.

FINANCIAL AID

SStS is in search of curious, compassionate, globally-minded students from all backgrounds. We will do all that we can financially to support students who require assistance. If you would like to be considered for financial assistance, please indicate this on the application.  Resources are limited and tend to be less than 50% of tuition.
