On Monday, we went to a shelter to serve food to migrants, deportees, and homeless people in Tijuana. We got to speak with a few of them and listen to their stories about their journeys in reaching Tijuana. Afterwards we went to Maria’s office and got to ask questions to Haitian migrants, a deported U.S. veteran, and a Colombian migrant. There, we learned about “Coyotes” and “polleros”, which are human smugglers, who help migrants cross the border in exchange for a very high price, and if they’re unable to pay, they usually assault or kill the migrants. Getting the opportunity to listen and ask questions to people who have gone through such rough journeys, was really inspiring and motivated us to want to learn more and do more on this field study.
