Today was an undeniably eventful day here in Meru! We started our morning with warm lemongrass tea before a drive to a local high school. We were greeted with a presentation of traditional dancing and singing, as well as short introductions from members of each grade. Dr. K shared her message about the power of education saying, “Education is the husband that will never beat you.” It was so interesting to listen and to share stories with the high schoolers and we joined them for their ‘tea’ break which actually consisted of porridge. Despite having just met, both the students and teachers of the St. Thomas school treated us with unbelievable hospitality. They asked us about our favorite classes, our passions, life in the U.S., and we did the same. Vicky, Winnie, and Brendah continued to compliment my bracelets so, I gave each of them one to remember me by. When it was time to leave, everybody hugged and expressed gratitude for each other’s company. The kids blew kisses as our vans pulled out, and I left with a smile on my face despite the unexpected beginning to the morning. On our way back to Tirigi, we drove through the rainforest and saw baboons! After lunch, we returned to KACH and were greeted by big hugs and lots of laughter from the kids. I played Scrabble with Angel, Ian, Faraja, and Thomas while Grace braided my hair. An intense game of soccer with the older kids caused uproars of laughter, and Finn rushed around KACH chasing giggling kids. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to connect with many different kids today, and each conversation I had left me reflecting on the ways, both big and small, that I interact with the world.
