Costa Rica (Turtles I)

Today, we started the day by sleeping in until nine. After breakfast, Juan took us on a walk on the beach. Because it was so hot, we found a shady spot along the beach where we sat in a circle as Juan, our guide, taught us the process that must happen after finding a turtle along the beach. After that, we split into two groups that each attempted to dig a hole; similar to that a mother turtle digs before laying her eggs. Because of this activity many of us realized just how much work the mother turtle has to do before laying 100 or more eggs. After a snack, we walked back to the house where most of us swam in the ocean. In our circle later, many people expressed how much they loved being in the ocean. Our time in the water was cut short because we needed to come back for lunch (which was amazing). Afterwards we had free time which was full of card games and bracelet making. After, we did some team building activities and games. We finished the day with a circle where we discussed why shoulder to shoulder might have sent us to help turtle trax instead of only sending money. We took away a lot of thoughts from this discussion including: that we came here so that we can sustain the work that Turtle Trax is doing by sharing their ideas with others and being mindful in our own lives. We could be mindful with our plastic use to avoid in going in the ocean, by being aware of the space around us, and how our actions impact others. Finally, we ate a delicious dinner before getting ready for bed.
