Costa Rica (Turtles I)

Today, our fourth day on our Shoulder to Shoulder excursion to Costa Rica, we woke up an hour later than the previous days in order to recover from our first turtle patrol. For our turtle patrol, we split into four groups. Two groups left the house at 10:30 to do the first hour and a half of turtle patrolling. Within the first hour and a half we saw two turtles. One was laying her eggs and the second was already headed back into the ocean. In addition to the rare sight of seeing two turtles in one night, we also experienced the brightest stars most of us have ever seen. We also saw the clear Milky Way Galaxy. Our second turtle patrol group wasn’t quite as lucky but they were still able to see the turtle tracks and the beautiful sky above. The day after our turtle patrol started with many of us running on only 6 hours of sleep. However, we powered through and spent the morning practicing our teamwork and collaboration by digging ditches around the hatchery to assist us in building a fence. After a morning of hot sun, dirt caked arms, and many empty water bottles, we returned to the house to eat a delicious lunch of tacos and blackberry juice. We spent the early afternoon talking about ethical leadership and what makes each of us ethical leaders. One of many takeaways from our conversation was that without moral imagination, we cannot be ethical leaders. Furthermore, we talked about how part of ethical leadership is knowing when to delegate. Each of us shared an example of positive change we’ve seen in our community that reflects ethical leadership. We spent the late afternoon preparing costumes and accessories for later in the week when we visit the Coyote school to teach the kids about turtles. We ended the day with a soak in the pool, some delicious pasta, and an appearance from a Halloween crab around the dinner table.
