Yesterday concluded with a horrific episode of a four-cockroach invasion in the instructor’s room after dinner. Without further ado… Welcome to Snorkeling Saturday! The morning commenced with the usual reluctance to get out of our warm beds. Later we ate a delicious breakfast of omelets, bread, and fruit while talking about random subjects. To our great excitement, the boat arrived to take us out to get our snorkels and to Isla Zapatilla. There we were shocked to see that we had an island all to ourselves in silent perfection. Sadly, the good luck did not last long since the tourists arrived a few hours later in a total of 8 boats. The water was too clear to be true and small fishes swam under the marine kelp fields. Part of the group walked around the perimeter of the island in an astonishing time of 40 minutes. In the meanwhile, the others grew hungry as lunchtime arrived. Everyone regained their strength with sandwiches, chips, and sodas on the warm, summery beach. As the time to leave for our second snorkel site got closer, the sky got darker. The storm was approaching at rapid speeds and we still had to get back to Bastimentos. A long, bumpy ride later, we left out snorkeling gear and set off the island right when the rain started. The waves made us jump and the rain soaked us giving the environment a cooler feeling. Our second snorkel trip was impossible to do so we used our 4 rainy hours to walk around, read, rest, talk, and laugh in Bastimentos. Dinner was very yummy and funny while Tessa dissected her quesadilla in front of the slightly-offended group. Then it was time for our nightly ice cream walk once again. I got a Neapolitan ice cream (a combination of vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate) which tasted slightly odd. One part of the group went in search of milkshakes while some others (including myself) returned to the rooms. Later on, three of our bravest members went to visit the cemetery in the dark.
