We went to a children’s shelter in the morning to spend some time and play with kids. While we were there, we played bowling and Loteria (Mexican bingo), as well as making paper airplanes and drawing with them. Despite there being somewhat of a language barrier, the kids were understanding that we were not great at Spanish. After almost 2 hours of playing and talking with the kids, we reluctantly had to leave and say goodbye. From this experience, we learned that there are children affected by the immigration situation, yet they were still happy to be there. After, we went to the market. There were many vendors with handmade items that were very beautiful, and we were able to bargain with them. In the late afternoon, we went to the Muslim migrant shelter to listen to the stories of the various migrants there. For example, one man from Yemen had been displaced for 15 years and was rejected by many countries before coming to Tijuana. Many migrants had similar stories of hardship and worry that were very moving. From this, we understood that migrants come from all over the world and the hardships that they experience are something they should be able to conclude with asylum. We hope we can use this as a chance to make a difference for them in the future.
