The group returned to Urubamba today after an impactful week in the mountains. We worked with school children in Cuncani to inspire pride in their mountain ecosystems and installed a new irrigation system in the school’s greenhouse; and we had the opportunity to harvest potatoes alongside the Cuncani community members who came out to support our host Anacleto. We then trekked across the Urubamba range topping out at 15,700 ft alongside 10 Andean community members our 3 Llama Pack Project guides and 40 Llamas! The opportunity to connect with and learn from community members who were proud of and connected to the ancestral way of living in the high Andes was a true gift for our group. See below for some takeaways from various students:

Naviya Reddy – It was really special to be welcomed into Peruvian culture and taught about their traditions. As all of our group performed the Qíntu ritual at the top of the mountain, I felt welcomed into the community.

Maria Sandoval – I loved interacting with the community members and Nico and Alvaro! I learned many valuable and important things such as the significance of language, nature, and the importance of group mindset when reaching a goal that was challenging mentally and physically. This was proven as 26 of us crossed the pass at 15,700ft, as the bonds to nature and community grew!

Cecily Niese – I loved spending time with community members and the NGO guides. Although there was a language barrier at times, I felt like we were able to connect on a more spiritual level through the mountains.

Caroline Bagley – what impacted me the most during our time in Cuncani was hearing from community members about their experiences and learning about the culture in the mountains. I will never forget seeing community representative Analceto’s home and the many types of potatoes he harvests every year.

Amos Noto – I’ve really enjoyed getting exposed to such a different culture and experiencing such a different lifestyle. It’s been really cool to live in such a different way, even if it’s been for such a short amount of time. While I’m happy to be back in an actual bed at the Hotel Rumi, I’ve greatly enjoyed participating in this enlightening and valuable experience.
