During all my conversations with the local Kenyans in Meru, I’ve been asked various eye-opening questions about where I am from in America. Their confusion on topics normal to me, such as citizens’ carrying guns, teaches me more than even their answers to my own questions. First and foremost, I’ve learned the importance of peace, and the extent to which a person is able to maintain patience. The local Kenyans that I have met have such a tranquil approach to life, which even applies to the highways – zero car accidents regardless of traffic lights or signs. This puts my life on a pedestal of comparison, not of which is better but more for considering how communities react to each other, ranging from displays of respect to love.
My reason for enrolling in the program remains the wish to seek education about people far beyond the walls of my own community.
