Costa Rica (Turtles I)

oday was a mix of learning and relaxation. We were able to go to the turtle trax office and learn more about turtles from a researcher that we haven’t seen before. She had a lot of knowledge and expertise about specific turtle facts. The information helped us be more aware of all the threats to the turtles and also how to help conservation efforts. It was also fun to learn about the different types of turtles like the “dancing queen” Olive Ridley turtle. It was helpful to be able to learn about the turtles because some of us had the opportunity to see an Olive Ridley dance that night after she was finished laying eggs. We also went to the beach for swimming and relaxing after a good meal at a restaurant. We were very grateful for the beautiful beach and landscape. It felt unreal to actually be here in Costa Rica. Also, we were able to see the stars while out on turtle patrol. It was truly a gift to see since many of us can’t see stars like that at home. We also saw another turtle lay eggs on that patrol. With the help of Juan, we were able to relocate the nest to a safer place. It was cool to be able to use the knowledge that we learned to help a real turtle. Throughout the day we heard from multiple researches on information about turtles but also skills on conservation that we can take home with us and apply to our lives.
