We spent our last day in NOLA planting bullrush along the shoreline of Lake Maurepas. We woke up early this morning to drive to the swamp where we were met by our new friends Blaise, T. John, Jeremy, and Mr. Steve. We took a pontoon ride through the swamp to get to the lake; passing turtles, herons, and quite a few alligators along the way. The lake was beautiful. The water was shallow and clearer than any other water we had been in this week. Spanish moss hung from the giant cyprus trees, making us all feel like we had entered some sort of fairytale forest. Everyone had a great time as we planted all 1,000 plugs. By the end we all felt so accomplished. We even got our pictures taken for a magazine (Catch us in Louisiana Culture Vistas!!). For our last dinner we ate at Parkway Bakery and Tavern. All of us devoured our po’ boy sandwiches, and some of us even tried some alligator. Back at the house; we all reflected on what we loved, what was challenging, and what we learned in the past week. This trip taught all of us a lot of important lessons. We learned a lot about the problems here in New Orleans, and how as a community we can come up with solutions. We learned through the people of New Orleans that we could all be a little kinder to one another; whether it’s your best friend or a stranger on the street, its important to treat everyone with love and kindness. Finally, we learned how lending a helping hand can impact the community in significant ways. Thank you, New Orleans!!
