Running river – day three
Bumpy roads and hot air, the gods climbing the mountains like stairs up to heaven.
Rich with culture
A girl washing her hair, children walking back from school, Nepalese music setting the tune
Similar but different
The clouds wave to me as the river runs with the heat of the day.
Your life at home leading you here.
Each turn in the road gets cooler
Each breath, shorter
Cold and damp, reminding me of a girl thousands of miles away.
Rain tickles the roof as bugs praise the lightbulb
Tea, warm and sweet, heaven in a cup.
The journey is over, now you are here.
Similar but different.
Distant and shiny,
The river runs with the music of Nepal.
New faces – day four
Leaves shining golden
The sound of birds rising the morning sun.
Footsteps on wooden floors
Daisies on cracked pavement
The chatter of opened eyes fills the mountains, the summer air
Hands of prayer welcoming heavy boots on muddy stones
A foreign tongue making its way to the lips of new faces.

Today was our first full day in the Solukhumbu region. It was a pretty calm day since I woke up early and saw the sunrise. I’m still adjusting to the jet lag, but it was nice to see a view of the mountains early in the morning. After being up for a while I had a nice breakfast and lots of tea. After eating and seeing a view of the mountains, we went down to a market, which was interesting to see the lifestyle of the people in this region. The hike down was a little slippery, and on the way up it was a little challenging but not too bad. After that, we started our first days of work. I started off by clearing weeds in the volleyball area, and I ended by clearing the pathway. The work was a little tiring, but it was nice to have some tea after we finished. After that, we got ready to see the Nepali students dance and sing, which was interesting to see the music and types of dances they do. Overall, today was a solid and calm day.
