The first activity we got to participate in today was farming. It was a strenuous walk full of humidity and heat guided by the farmer’s son Kevin. Finally, we arrived and we’re greeted by Kevin’s friendly father Felix, who was the person in charge of the farm. He let us rest and geared us up with farming equipment, so that we could make our way into the sun to plant yellow corn. The process for planting corn was quite a simple one. First we had to dig a hole with a shovel, take three to four kernels out of a basket that we had tied to our torso, sprinkle them into the soil, close the hole loosely, and repeat until the end of the field. Because of constant sun, we made our way to a new field, where we harvested achiote (anatto), cassava, and young coconut. The cassava plant was like a small tree, whose top was chopped off with a machete, and then ripped out of the ground. Felix told us that he will cook it for us tomorrow. We also got to try coconut water from the young coconuts that were harvested. It was very delicious and refreshing, especially in the heat. Later on we made our way to Felix’s porch, where his son Kevin performed two songs for us. Everyone enjoyed hearing him sing, while also enjoying pineapple that Felix cut up for us. All in all, it was a great experience, because it made me grateful for all the hard work farmers have to go through, so that nobody goes hungry. It was wonderful to see how much passion Felix has for his job, and how he passes his knowledge on to others in a very respectful and calm manner. Everyone was very glad that they got to visit this wonderful farm.
