This morning we all had eggs and tomatoes with rice – but some of us were too tired to be hungry. Afterward, we continued our project by decorating the barrels. Tim wrote “garbage” using Chinese characters while the rest of us drew mountains, smiley faces, flowers, and an abstract painting of a howling wolf.

After we left the barrels to dry of few of the guys helped take down the black yak-fur tents. The homestay had set this up with the hope of making a “tent hotel” for guests. However, the weather was too rainy for it to work  – at least for the time being.

After lunch of rice (the rice here is seemingly endless, and I don’t think that most of us will be able to eat rice for a year after this trip) cucumbers and cauliflower, everyone went downstairs for nearly four hours of rest, which was definitely needed.

For dinner treat as a celebration of the 4th of July and Ben’s birthday. Lucas made everyone pizza with tomato sauce (because the Yak cheese is very sour) as well as bread rolls – both were greatly appreciated. It was actually remarkable for two reasons: (1)  Lukas is a very talented pizza maker and (2) the ingredients he had to cook with were quite limited.

After dinner we had a really good birthday cake. Tempa, our NGO guide, brought over some of his friends to sing Happy Birthday to Ben.

The little girl at our homestay home is adorable and hasn’t stopped moving since we arrived. She was enthralled by the little American flags.

We are halfway through our trip. I think almost all of us were getting homesick and the energy seemed lower than previous days. The familiar tastes of pizza and gummy bears along with a long nap helped loads, and everyone seemed more energized after dinner even though, in actuality, we were exhausted.

And seeing as there seems to be a theme in ending these blogs: and then we went to bed.
