Today was our third day here in Detroit. We started the day by receiving an introduction to the Focus Hope Organization from their director of volunteers, Khristi. We toured their facility, and saw that they provided support for the community of all ages. We were amazed by the dedication to and strong presence in the city. As part of our service, we volunteered with the children in a daycare facility ages 0-6. We played with the children outside, then brought them inside for naps. While the children napped, we assisted the teachers by helping sort the food and wash dishes.
During our lunch break we ventured into Highland Park. There we sought out an innovative, new, block called Avalon Village project that was part of a Detroit resident’s, Shu Harris, vision to revitalize the city and provide a safe space for children. Part of Shu’s vision is to redevelop a blighted neighborhood into a urban park in memory of her son. She also wishes to create a “homework house,” which is a space where children can receive meals, help for homework, and just relax. After our conversation with Shu the entire group was impressed with her dynamic energy, determination and resourcefulness. Her creative vision of rehabilitation was inspiring to all of us. People like Shu are the reason that Detroit is called the “comeback city.”
Following this we visited another revitalization project called the Heidelberg Project. It is an art gallery located within the streets of Detroit. There we saw modern art installations of things like shoes, clocks, dolls, and other repurposed materials. It displayed the creativity and pride the citizens of Detroit have for the city. It seems to be a common thread as we experience Detroit that the citizens have a passion for their city and rebuilding it into its former beauty.
Now we’re off to another surprise, a baseball game between the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins. Until next time, Beth Isabella and Maggie 🙂
