We partner with the Thorne Nature Experience to support a youth summer camp that deepens children’s relationships with the outdoors.

Program Overview

Alongside our partner, Thorne Nature Experience, you will learn about the role of hands-on, place-based, environmental education as a means to foster environmental stewardship through an emotional connection to nature. This program will allow take you to the beautiful outdoor setting of Boulder, Colorado where you will enable all young children, regardless of race, ethnicity, or family income, to connect with nature.

While in Boulder you will support Thorne’s Summer Camp Program which gives youth from 3-15 the chance to explore nature through engaging learning experiences. As a teaching assistant, you will actively assist in the education of students about the wonders of the natural world through joyful, hands-on, field-based exploration. You will also have the opportunity to learn about other organizations providing youth and families with access to nature and the outdoors as a means of fostering environmental stewardship.

LEARNING SERVICE
Students will support Thorne Nature, a local nonprofit, in delivering a joyful, hands-on, place- based environmental education experiences.

CURRICULUM
Prior to their travels, students complete a series of online activities (30 minutes each). While traveling, they also read engaging articles, participate in cultural experiences, and create presentations in small groups.

TREKKING
Students will be leading hikes of up to one mile in length (at altitude) while supporting the summer camp. In addition, the group will be doing longer hikes while exploring the surrounding area.

LIVING CONDITIONS
The group stays at a local home reserved for our group. Students will be cooking meals together and living in shared rooms of 4 people each.

ON THE MOVE
While the program is based in Boulder, the group will be driving by van each day for up to 30 minutes to the summer camp location.

REMOTENESS
The group will spend their entire time exploring different neighborhoods in the Boulder metropolitan area in addition to exploring the surrounding mountains and trails.

Boulder : In Three Phases

PRE-COURSE CURRICULUM

Prior to your departure, you will be guided by your course instructors through a series of interactive, online lessons designed to help you engage with other members of your group while gaining important context for your experience.

FIELD STUDY

The majority of the days at each site are spent learning from our local partners and serving alongside them shoulder-to-shoulder. You will learn through service and experiences designed to help you understand the local context, culture, and history.

LIFELONG NETWORK

Ethical leadership is a lifelong journey. After your experience, you will become a part of the Shoulder-to-Shoulder network. This network of past alumni and partners is designed to inspire and support your journey in ethical leadership.

Travel Journal

During the travel phase of each SStS course, you will spend time reflecting and processing your experience. As this is our first year running the program we do not have any travel posts. Please check back soon.

AIRFARE

Students are responsible for booking their own flights to meet the group in Denver. Once enrolled our admissions team will assist you in choosing the correct arrival and departure times.

FINANCIAL AID

SStS is in search of curious, compassionate, globally-minded students from all backgrounds. We will do all that we can financially to support students who require assistance. If you would like to be considered for financial assistance, please indicate this on the application.  Resources are limited and tend to be less than 50% of tuition.
